Career
RDB (Rhythm, Dhol, Bass) is a British Indian music group founded in 1997 by three brothers: Kuldeep, Surjeet, and Manjeet Singh Ral. The band is known for blending western musical styles with traditional Punjabi beats and vocals. Following the tragic passing of the eldest brother Kuldeep in 2012 and Manjeet’s departure to pursue a solo career, the band continued with Surjeet as the sole remaining member.
RDB's musical journey began in their local gurdwara, where they performed with their father, playing instruments like the harmonium and tabla, which laid the foundation for their musical creativity. Their passion for technology and sound experimentation led them to create a unique fusion style. In 2003, they earned recognition by winning the "Best Club DJ Bhangra" award at the UK Asian Music Awards. In April 2011, Kuldeep was diagnosed with a brain tumor and passed away in May 2012 after battling illness.
Though Surjeet initially planned to continue working with Manjeet, the band split after Kuldeep’s death, with Surjeet continuing to perform under the RDB name and Manjeet pursuing a solo career. In 2013, RDB won Best Music Video for "We Doin' It Big" at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards (BAMA), and in 2014, they were awarded Best Music Video for "Daddy Da Cash" featuring T-Pain. However, that year, Manjeet filed a lawsuit against Surjeet over the rights to RDB’s songs and brand, though the Bombay High Court rejected his request for an injunction, and the lawsuit was eventually withdrawn in 2016. As of 2019, Manjeet is active as an independent artist.
