Career
Jal (Urdu: جل, meaning "Water") is a renowned pop-rock band from Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Founded in 2002, the band initially featured Goher Mumtaz as the lead guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, along with Atif Aslam as the lead vocalist. Later, bassist Omer Nadeem and drummer Salman Albert joined the group in 2003. The band first rose to prominence within Lahore's underground music scene with their breakout song "Aadat," which earned them commercial success. After Atif Aslam left the band to pursue a solo career, Goher Mumtaz recruited Farhan Saeed as the new vocalist and Aamir Tufail (Shazi) on bass guitar. This new lineup produced their debut album Aadat (2004), which topped the charts and became the best-selling album of 2004. Following the release of Boondh (2007) and the award-winning Pyaas (2013), Jal continued to enjoy success, becoming a significant force in the South Asian music industry.
Throughout the years, Jal has achieved numerous accolades, including MTV Asia Awards and Lux Style Awards. They gained popularity not just in Pakistan, but also in India and other countries. Their music videos like "Lamhay," "Sajni," and "Chaltay Chaltay" became major hits. Despite lineup changes and internal challenges, Jal has continued to perform on prestigious platforms like London's O2 Arena and maintain a loyal fanbase. In 2013, the band released their third studio album Pyaas and continued to release singles, including songs for TV dramas and the Pakistan Armed Forces. With their rich legacy, Jal remains one of Pakistan's most beloved music acts.
