Career
Ali Aziz Sethi (b. July 2, 1984) is a Pakistani-American singer, songwriter, composer, and author. Born in Lahore to prominent journalists and politicians Najam Sethi and Jugnu Mohsin, Sethi initially gained recognition for his debut novel, The Wish Maker (2009). He later trained in Hindustani classical music under Ustad Naseeruddin Saami and Farida Khanum, transitioning to a career in music.
Sethi debuted as a singer with the song "Dil Jalaane Ki Baat Karte Ho" in Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012) and gained prominence with his performances on Coke Studio Pakistan, particularly the hit song "Pasoori" (2022), which became the first Pakistani track to top Spotify's Global Viral Chart and amassed over 700 million YouTube views. His music blends classical South Asian ragas with contemporary arrangements, earning acclaim for reviving traditional genres like ghazals and Punjabi folk.
In addition to his musical achievements, Sethi has written for publications such as The New York Times and The Guardian, advocating for inclusivity and cultural preservation. Named in Time magazine's "Time 100 Next" (2022), he is also the first Artist in Residence at Brown University's Saxena Center for Contemporary South Asia.
